With out the protection of a clay or steel liner the only thing separating the fire from your house is a single layer of brick and mortor that are not designed for these temperatures. The brick and mortor will literaly explode allowing the fire to reach the interior walls of your house and put you and your family in danger. If you do decide to use a free standing wood stove or fireplace insert without a proper liner PLEASE if the room get to hot open a door or window instead of shutting down the dampers. The use of an anti-creasote product helps this problem but you should have your chimney swept by a trained professional after every cord of wood burned.
