The "entente" was actually a prewar COMMERCIAL, NOT MILITARY treaty between Britain and France. The French and the Russians had a Treaty of Military Alliance from 1892. This was in response to the Triple Alliance, of Germany, Austro-Hungaria, and Italy, created in 1882. Because Russia was an ally of France, and Britain was also in the war on the side of France (having entered the war over German violation of Belgian neutrality though, and not because of any alliance with France), the whole coalition was sometimes called "the Entente Powers".

The alliance system
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. It was the first peacetime military alliance the United States entered into outside of the Western Hemisphere.
In 189o, after Bismarck had been dismissed as chancellor of Germany, refused to renew her treaty of friendship with Russia. This gave France an opportunity. France extended military and industrial loans to Russia and gained Russia's confidence. In 1894 the two nations entered into the Dual Alliance.
Many European countries entered into alliances before the Great War, for example Germany and Austria-Hungary in the Dual alliance in 1879. The Dual Alliance was a defensive alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary, which pledged to aid one another in case of an attack by Russia.
European countries entered into military alliances that required them to protect one another from attacks
No countries really 'entered' the Cold war, this was not an official 'declared' war. It was so called because of the opposing ideology of the Soviet system and the democratic western countries who made up the NATO Alliance. France was part of NATO until 1966 and then left.
Militarism, alliances, Imperialism, and nationalism European countries entered into military alliances that required them to protect one another from attacks. This led to escalation as more countries were drawn into the war.
