Cycle ignition key on,off,on,off,on and count the flashes of the check engine light. It will flash two digit codes. Two flashes, pause, two flashes would be a code 22. The other option is an OBD 1 capable scan tool.
Flashes would be the plural of flash.
"Flash" is the singular. One flash, many flashes.
The plural form of flash is flashes
Turn on the switch, and hold the override switch. Count the number of flashes for the first number of fault, then wait for a pause in the flash, then count the number of flashes for the second digit in the fault. Count the number of flashes until it cycles back around. Examples of codes would be 2 yellow or red flashes, then a pause, then 5 yellow or red flashes then a pause would be a code 25
On any Jeep/Chrysler up to 1995, all you have to do is put your key into the ignition, DO NOT START, turn it to the on, then off, then on, then off, then back to the on. Very soon you will see the check engine light flash. The first set of 2 flashes should be a "Flash-short pause-Flash-Flash-Long Pause, this is a code 12. Code 12 is very normal and should be there. Watch for other flashes after this one. The finale flashes will be a series of 5 flashes-short pause-5 flashes, which is a code 55 that means all codes have been retrieved. Many people have trouble understanding how to read the codes, if you just write down ALL of the flashes and separate the first 2 flashing numbers and the last 2 flashing numbers then you should be able to figure out what the other flashing numbers are. From there you can find out what the codes mean by going to many places on the internet, this is one of them. http://allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.HTML or you can even find them at autozone.com I hope this helps you out.

on my 86 there is a slot in the kick panel under ashtray approx. if you are using a reader that's the place.if using other method may have to remove kick panel and use paper clip to actuate the codes....the chk engine light will flash a 12 meaning 1 flash and a 2 which is 2 flases = 12....then the code will flash another sequence example 3 flashes then 5 flashes =code 35
turn the key on, off, on, off, on. basically on 3 times in a row without starting it. shortly after the check engine light goes off it will flash out the fault codes. 2 digits long like 5 flashes then 5 flashes means 55. there will be a longer pause at the end of code. 55 is the end of codes code by the way. turn the key on, off, on, off, on. basically on 3 times in a row without starting it. shortly after the check engine light goes off it will flash out the fault codes. 2 digits long like 5 flashes then 5 flashes means 55. there will be a longer pause at the end of code. 55 is the end of codes code by the way.
