The castle sits on top of an extinct volcano, and together with what's known today as the Royal Mile, this forms a 'crag and tail' formation. This is because during the last ice age, a glacier swept past the volcano from west to east, scraping away sheer cliffs on three sides but leaving a gentle slope on the east side. Early settlers saw the great defensive qualities of these features, which is why they chose to build there.

The site has been fortified since the Iron Age, but the oldest existing part of the castle is St Margaret's Chapel which dates from the 1100s.

The castle has played an important part in Scottish history and was captured by the English during the Wars of Independence in the late 13th/early 14th Centuries. It was re-captured for the Scots by Robert the Bruce's nephew Sir Thomas Randolph.

An old tradition is the 1 o'clock gun, which is fired from the battlements at 1pm every day for the people of Edinburgh to set their watches by.

The castle is the most popular tourist attraction in Scotland and receives over 1 million visitors every year.
