Effects of climate change on agriculture in nigeria?

Much of Nigerian agriculture is rain-fed (dependent on natural rainfall). Global warming has affected the pattern of rainfall across the different agro-climatic belts in this country, as there is either less or more rainfall than the farmers have been accustomed to. To make matters worse, the quantum of rainfall for a given period can no longer be predicted accurately. Farmers are bound to suffer heavy losses due to both inadequate and excessive rainfall. In the case of inadequate rainfall a well-planned irrigation intervention can save the day. Unfortunately excessive rainfall is difficult to remedy, and is accompanied by environmental devastation and degradation that sabotages alternative sources of livelihood like forests and streams.

Furthermore, torrential rains that cause flooding does not only destroy crops, livestock and other land resources, they also destroy homes and valuable infrastructure especially roads and bridges . This effectively cuts the farming populations from markets for their produce, and hinders access to education and needed healthcare facilities. The grand effect is that agricultural growth and farmers' living standards would be seriously compromised.

Over the past 150 years, that area has seen 0.3 degrees of warming (debatabley). The next twenty years are projected to be cooler and we have seen no warmth the past 1- years. The likely near term issue (next 200 years) is that there will be no change due to the fact there is no expected warming going to occur.
