Fitness is highly specific. There are 3 main regions, Strength, Stamina and Suppleness. And within these regions there are many sub categories.

An athlete who works on their power will have to sacrifice their log distance endurance because they comprise of 2 different energy systems and muscle fibre types which have the ability to take more of their share (might start out as 50/50 but thru training you can change them to 60/40) if you train them for that.
