Gun powder made castles useless. The first castles were mott and bailey designs. This means they were made of wooden posts on hills with the wooden walls surrounding an open area that contained stables, a few huts, the main castle hall. There are a lot of disadvantages to wood because it can be set on fire, the weather rots wood, and it can be damaged with tools. The result was to make castles stronger by using stone. Instead of tearing down the wooden walls they made a facade in front of them and then filled in the space between the stone and wood with the debris of the walls. So, at a distance it looked like one solid wall and castle. When gun power was invented and came to Europe the days of castles was numbered. A hole could be blown into a wall with a cannonball, so the castles no longer provided protection to the people of the castle.
By battering rams.
they were attacked by soldiers setting the motte and Bailey castles alight and the castles also had pickaxes through at the door because in a matter of time the pickaxes would make a hole in the door and they could get through.
Castles usually defended themselves by having a wall with a moat or ontop of a hill
