Can hypnosis help ADHD?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hypnosis may help improve symptoms of ADHD, such as impulsivity or inattention, by providing relaxation and increasing focus. However, it is not a stand-alone treatment and should be used in conjunction with other ADHD management strategies, such as therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. It's essential to consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating hypnosis into an ADHD treatment plan.

What disagreement did Sigmund Freud have with both Josef Breuer and Jean Martin Charcot?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Sigmund Freud disagreed with Josef Breuer and Jean Martin Charcot on the underlying causes of psychological symptoms. While Breuer and Charcot focused on physical causes, Freud believed that many symptoms stemmed from unconscious psychological processes and repressed emotions. Freud's emphasis on the role of the unconscious mind and childhood experiences in shaping behavior and mental health challenged the prevailing medical views of his time.

What are three explanations of hypnosis?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

  1. State theory suggests hypnosis alters a person's state of consciousness, leading to increased suggestibility and reduced awareness of external stimuli.
  2. Dissociation theory proposes that hypnosis involves a splitting of mental processes, allowing for a level of detached observation and responsiveness to suggestions.
  3. Social influence theory suggests that hypnosis is a product of the relationship between the hypnotist and the participant, with expectations and compliance playing a significant role in the experience.

Can you hypnotize a girl to like you?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is not ethical or appropriate to hypnotize someone to make them like you. Developing a healthy relationship should be based on mutual respect, consent, and genuine connection. It is important to build a relationship based on trust and understanding rather than using manipulation techniques like hypnosis.

Difference between hypnotism and mesmerism?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hypnotism refers to a state of focused relaxation and heightened suggestibility induced through verbal cues and mental imagery. Mesmerism, on the other hand, is an older term that involves the transmission of a supposed healing energy from the practitioner to the subject. While both involve altered states of consciousness, mesmerism focuses more on energy transfer, whereas hypnotism emphasizes suggestion and relaxation.

Is there a video that can hypnotize you?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are a lot of hypnosis videos on youtube that are very effective. Some are for fun, some attempt or claim some sort of therapy.

I'd stick to the fun videos and be *very*skeptical of any who claim to improve.

Here's what I look for:

* Effective hypnosis involves some sort of induction - a process that numbs the conscious mind and makes the subject comfortable with accepting suggestion.

* You will not be hypnotized by funky visual patterns or weird audio. You will only be hypnotized by suggestions, either voice or written. Some of the best are very plain.

* Anything shorter than five minutes or so probably won't do the trick.

Good luck

What happens to u when you are hypnotised?

User Avatar

Asked by LorrenCianci

It depends on many variables - eg who is hypnotizing you, and for what purpose? Also, what is your motivation in being hypnotized, and the exact context in which it occurs: is it for fun/ entertainment (just for the experience!), or for other, more serious, purposes? Is it public or private?

It's also important to remember that individual responses vary considerably - not just in absolute terms (some people are far more responsive than others), but also in individuals from time to time depending on their current mood/ state of mind etc.. What happens on one occasion may not necessarily be replicated the next time.

Finally, but not least, confidence in the hypnotist is paramount, and irrespective of context, if trust in him/ her has been in some way undermined, then nothing much will happen. To summarise, it is hard to generalise - individual responses and experiencies will vary considerably, and you can't really be hypnotized unless you want to be.

So, what happens when you're hypnotized depends very much on you, and the context you're in: it's a process of communication between you and the hypnotist, and everything is really determined by that relationship, and what you think you're trying to achieve.

Why aren't memories that are elicited through hypnosis admissible as testimony in most courts?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When someone is under hypnosis, they usually try to follow commands to the letter (if they intended to before beginning the procedure). When someone is prompted to try and remember something after they have denied knowledge on the subject, they are likely to 'try' so hard that they make up details that don't exist, especially details that reinforce the subjects personal bias/viewpoints.

Is hypnosis related to psychology?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. Hypnosis was broadly used by the first psychoanalysts and even today they still use, as well as psychologists from other schools (namely the cognitivists). It's a scientific way to access the mind without the repression of the superego, and it's very effective particularly treating addictions (namely cigarette addiction).

What is the effect called when you get hypnotized?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Experiences of hypnosis vary considerably, but most feel very relaxed, detached, and have little desire to move major muscle groups unless told to do so. The hypnotic state is often described along the lines of "dreamlike"; "floating", or like being slightly drunk, but without the negatives. Some experience a general "heaviness" of the body and limbs, but others feel the opposite - a real sense of "lightness".

Frequently sense of time is distorted (it may seem accelerated or delayed), and it's not uncommon for the hypnotist's voice to sound either very distant, or as if it's "right inside the head". Although most people remain fully aware in hypnosis, focus is usually very narrow, and although background sounds etc will still be heard, generally peripheral awareness is much reduced.

Twitching of small muscles is common, asis watering of the eyes, and vision may be distorted - eg a "tunnel" effect, or sometimes a general "blurring". It is not uncommon for deeply hypnotized people to experience spontaneous erection of the genitalia, which will probably be embarrassing, but is a normal physiological response to being in a REM state.

A few people become somnambulistic - they can open their eyes, stand, walk around, perform tasks etc whilst remaining in deep trance, and it is not unusual for such individuals to experience partial or total amnesia about what what exactly took place whilst hypnotized. These are, however, the minority (10% or less), and most people simply experience a hypnotic trance as an episode of profound relaxation during which they were fully aware of everything.

Generally, hypnotized people are very "literal minded", accepting ideas and suggestions at face value, and they are often quite "playful", and happy to do things without inhibition - unless, of course, what's suggested is offensive to them!

To summarize, most hypnotized people feel calm, happy, and relaxed, and for most it's a positive experience during which they're less inhibited than they might usually be.

What are the characteristics of someone who is easily hypnotizable?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Someone who wants to experience hypnosis is most likely to be hypnotized! You can not be hypnotized against your will - you have to be motivated to try it.

The most responsive people are usually of above average intelligence; have good powers of concentration, and are generally able to become deeply absorbed in tasks such as reading. Highly hypnotizable people tend to have strong imaginative and creative capabilities, and are always able and willing to follow instructions. It is also important to be able to suspend critical judgement, and do as asked without questioning or analyzing everything.

People who regularly "dissociate" (eg frequent "daydreamers"), and/ or those who regularly experience "lucid dreams" (ie dreams during which you're aware of the fact you're dreaming, and where sometimes you can even "shape" your dreams), or hypnapompic and hypnogogic episodes when falling asleep and waking are usually extremely responsive to hypnosis, as are those who had imaginary friends in chilhood.

Generally, if someone wants to be hypnotized, and is prepared uncritically to follow instructions, then they can enter hypnosis. The degree of hypnosis attained will, however, vary considerably from person to person - some are a lot better at it than others. Highly critical, "controlling" types, are not good candidates, and those low on willingness to trust are similarly inhibited.

The "Eye Roll Test" is reckoned to be a fairly reliable indicator of "hypnotizability", although some contest this. IMHO, however, anyone willing to "take the test" is already signalling a degree of interest in experiencing hypnosis liable to make them responsive, and those able to roll their eyes right up into their heads so only the whites are showing, and maintain this easily, do tend to be readily hypnotizable.
