Sociolinguistics no two speakers speak the same language?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Sociolinguistics emphasizes that language varies among speakers and communities due to social, cultural, and individual influences. This variation can range from differences in dialects and accents to variations in vocabulary and grammar usage. Thus, while there may be similarities among speakers, no two individuals speak the exact same language due to these multifaceted influences.

Interrelationship between the branches of linguistics?

User Avatar

Phonetics -- the study of unanalyzed speech sound. For example, you look at the sound waves to try to do voice recognition.

Phonology -- the study of analyzed speech sounds. For example, what are the vowels and consonants? Which vowels do all languages have? What sequences of sounds can begin a word in Russian?

Morphology -- the study of prefixes, suffixes and roots. For example, what order can you put prefixes in? (You can say un-under-standable, but not under-un-standable).

Syntax -- the study of word order and relationships between words. For example, why can you say:
He loaded boxes on the cart. > He loaded the cart with boxes.
But not:
He ate lunch on the pier. > ???He ate the pier with lunch.

Syntacticians also study what pronouns refer to:
He praised himself.
He asked Mary to praise herself.
????He asked Mary to praise himself. (Himself can't refer to 'he'.)

Semantics -- the study of meaning. What is a synonym or antonym? What is denotation vs. connotation.

There are also fields which study the boundaries between these basic fields, such as morphosyntax, phonosemantics, morphosemantics, etc.

How do you pronounce Reay?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The most correct spelling is Ra.

=====================================================

Neither Re nor Ra represents the word as written in hieroglyphs, so neither is "correct" in any sense. The name of the sun god is written with signs spelling two consonants: r+' (a glottal stop, also found in Arabic, Phoenician and Hebrew). Hieroglyphs did not record any vowels, so we can never know how this name was pronounced. Modern Egyptologists and students of hieroglyphs use both Ra and Re, simply to be able to pronounce R' in a communicable form.

One linguistic theory (based on contemporary foreign versions of Egyptian names containing the name of the sun god) suggests that Ria' may be accurate, but this is purely hypothesis.

To suggest that "Ra is the most correct spelling" is misleading, disingenuous and mendacious.
