You own a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. The lights in the radio faded until they were completely out. All the other lights still work in it but the radioclock lights. What could have caused it?
Same problem on a lot of Ford,Mercury radio displays. You can go to www.shareamemory.com/radio/ to get the story and a pay for fix or ask the same question at batauto.com. It's a component heat/solder failure.

Not enough info... If the lights are dim, there is an illumination wire that dims the lights when the headlights come on at night... could be a bad switch. If your lights are totally gone... so is your radio. It is a sealed unit not meant to be serviced. Even if you could find someone to repair it, by the time you were done, it would be cheaper to buy an aftermarket or an original factory Delco from eBay.

1st check fuse is ok. I believe is is labeled BK/Lamp or some abbreiviation. 2nd verify bulb(s) ok (I doubt if both are bad). 3rd with park brake on, ignition on and in revearse, test for voltage coming from switch located on transmission. If ok there, then you most likely have a wiring broblem, possibly a bad ground.

Try bypassing the reverse light switch that plugs into the transmission. If your reverse lights come on, voila! Problem solved. Buy a new switch.

presuming you've checked all the fuses and relays theres a sender switch on the transmission should have 2 wires attached to it.. make sure the wires are not disconnected or damaged

When the shifter goes to the reverse position a switch is depressed to turn on the back up lights. The switch is most likely on the top of the transmission.
