We still have a 1997 Expedition (2WD version) purchased new, now with 172,000 miles that turns 16 years old next week, Only been in the shop twice in sixteen years (other than the three safety recalls it went in for in the late 90's that were free). Still has the original starter, alternator, shocks, ball joints, coolant, water pump, serpentine belt, fuel filter, spark plugs, never changed the transmission or differential fluid, no rust, just normal cosmetic wear and tear. Best vehicle ever! I'm a car a guy and usually take really good car of vehicles, but when it got to 100,000 miles a few years back and SHOULD have started needing things replaced, I wanted to wait and see "what broke first" and then start replacing parts. NOTHING EVER BROKE (except for the ordinary new set of tires, battery, brake pads/rotors when they were needed)! It's defied all the odds of having a major problem so far. Use it as a daily driver, but limit it to "in-town" trips only now. Still starts and runs just like it was new and the two wheel drive version still gets 20.3 mpg out on the highway at a constant 75 mph. This may not be representative of the vehicle/year as a whole, but this result is real. I would never have guessed this outcome back on March 5, 1997 when we drove it off the Ford dealers lot with 3 miles on the odometer.
