The Vatican state draws a large number of tourists and the artwork is a major attraction. This provides income to operate the Church in all it's various capacities. Occasionally some works of art are put on exhibit generating ticket revenue. As the earlier poster points out, it is to the glory and celebration of God that these assets advertise and through careful management of assets they can operate on revenue generated. They inspire a sense of awe in it's followers which is important in religious belief. While last report showed roughly 52 billion in assets that is not a large number compared to the scale of the Catholic Church. A large portion of those assets are non-liquid and of artistic value only and with substantial operating costs 52 billion for a global enterprise of it's size is not suprising. As a business it is not much larger then Microsoft, Google or IBM in that regards.
