The Election of 1824 had four regional candidates and no one got a majority of the electoral vote, so according to the Constitution, the House of Representatives chose the President from the top three vote-getters. They elected John Quincy Adams who came in second both in electoral votes and popular votes. 4th place finisher, Henry Clay was able to swing the states that he had won to John Q. Adams, in an apparent trade for his being appointed Secretary of States by Adams. Andrew Jackson, who had the plurality of electoral votes and popular votes, thought a corrupt bargain had been struck.
The Election of 1860
1860
Two Presidents obtained office without running in a general election. George Washington, the United States' first President, was elected unanimously by the Electoral College in 1789 and 1792.Gerald Ford, who was then House Minority Leader, was appointed Vice-President in 1973 when Spiro T. Agnew resigned to face charges of tax evasion. Ford assumed the Presidency in August 1974 when President Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment for obstructing justice in the Watergate scandal, and thus was not elected to office by voters. Jimmy Carter defeated Ford in the 1976 Presidential election.
Generally speaking, the year of 2008 saw the election of an Afro American to the US Presidency. Barack Obama became the first black man to be elected president. Not only was this significant for the US, it displayed the fact that it is rare for any nation to elect a minority person to be head of State.
A minority president is a president that gets elected with less than 50% of the popular vote. Abe Lincoln was a minority president, for example.
Gerald Ford is the only man who be both President and Vice President without being elected to either position. In 1973 following the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew, President Richard Nixon appointed House Minority Leader and Congressman Gerald Ford to replace Agnew as the Vice President. Ford served as the Vice President from 1973 until 1974 when Nixon resigned from the Presidency following the Watergate scandal. Ford served as president from 1974 until 1977 when he was replaced as President by Jimmy Carter.
The first election of President Obama brought out many young people and minority first-time voters. The second election of President Obama had people waiting in line for hours to be able to vote.
conservatives win with a minority
he had a minority of the people's vote.
The first minority President is President Barack Obama. He is half African American and Caucasian. Most people refer to him as African American.
Congressional leadership is a follows: House of Representative: Speaker of the House Majority Leader Minority Leader Majority Whip Minority Whip Senate: President of the Senate (vice president of the U. S.) Majority Leader Minority Leader President pro tempore of the Senate Assistant Majority Leader (Majority Whip) Assistant Minority Leader (Minority Whip)
Some people refer to the current US President, Barack Obama as a minority President because he is of his Afro American heritage. Even though his mother is considered a "white" person, it does not matter. This is because never has a US President had a dual heritage, thus "minority" is still a logical term to use.
