Vietnam was ruled by France as a colony during the 1800's and early 1900's. The territory under French control in southeast Asia was known as French IndoChina. The revolt of the Vietnamese people against French colonization lead to US involvment and the Vietnam war.
It became a Spanish Colony and 400 years later Impearlist Americans made it a part of their Empire as a US Territory.
The French colony of Pondicherry (Puducherry) was a group of four colonies (Pondicherry, Karaikal, and Yanam on the Bay of Bengal and Mahé on the Arabian Sea). Pondicherry existed in some form from 1742 until 1954. British control of India severely limited French activities there, despite agreements that were part of the Treaty of Paris in 1814.
