It was called the kings crusade because at the time Richard the lion heart and saladin had a fight against the holy land, they are both kings in some sort of way.
In the third crusade, which took place from 1189 to 1192, (or Kings' Crusade), the European Kings attempted to reconquer the Holy Land from Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt and Syria. Though it was a massive success, the kings never reconquered Jerusalem, the jewel of the crown.

Frederick Barbarossa died on the way, and was replaced by Leopold V of Austria.

Richard the Lionheart was the leader of the Catholic army during the crusade of kings. He is named "The Lionheart" because he was the only king to complete his crusade during the Crusade of kings (neither the king of France, or the king of Germany finished). Saladin was his opposition.
