During the American Civil War battle that took place around and in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1863, Union forces first approached the city from the north. After an initial defeat, they then marched around the city, crossed the Mississippi River, and approached the city from the south. After several battles in the area of Jackson (MS), the main northern army then approached Vicksburg from the east and finally laid siege to the city.

It started out correctly, following the railroad from Memphis, down the East bank of the Mississippi.

But then Lincoln had given separate orders to John McClernand to lead a new army down the West bank of the river, and Grant had to join him.

This made the approach to Vicksburg highly complicated, and in the end Grant had no choice but to cross the river thirty miles below the town and march Northeast into the interior of Mississippi.

After winning the Battle of Champions Hill, Grant managed to drive the Confederates back into their lines at Vicksburg, and then besieged them till they surrendered on the Fouth of the July 1863.
