August 6 1945
The Enola Gay flew eight practice missions from Tinian, then two conventional bombing missions over Japan prior to taking off carrying the 'Little Boy' atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan during World War II.
In the summer of 1945, (July, August and September), George Zabelka was the Catholic chaplain to the 509th Composite Group on Tinian Island. The 509th was the Atomic Bomb Group. The Enola Gay and the Bockscar carried the atomic bombs that were used against the Japanese. Tinian Island was the base from which these planes took off and returned to in conducting the operation.
The Enola Gay (B-29-45-MO, AAF Serial Number 44-86292, Victor number 82) was built by the Glenn L. Martin Company (now Lockheed Martin) at its Bellevue, Nebraska plant, at what is now known as Offutt Air Force Base. Enola Gay was one of 15 B-29s with the "Silver-plate" modifications necessary to deliver atomic weapons. In the Hiroshima attack, this aircraft took off from Tinian island to deliver the atomic weapon.

On August 6th 1945, the US Army Air Force B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay, physically dropped a nuclear fission device dubbed "Little Boy" on the Nipponjin (Japanese) city of Hiroshima. The weapon had been delievered to Tinian Island and the US Air Base a week prior to the bombing. After retrofitting the Enola Gay to accept the weapon's unusual dimensions, it took off on its flight plan with its escort bombers/camera planes.
