The issue is that the fuel cap can get misaligned so that it's in the closed position even though the cap is off. To fix this, I used two flat screwdrivers to prop up the metal tabs on each side. Then I was able to rotate the white plastic piece so it is in the "open" position. You may need two people to do this.

I have this car also and I've found that if you don't use premium gas your gas hand will not read, and it goes to zero(it malfunctions) its weird.
