Originally the genus name for different species of bacteria was simply bacterium. Over time the names were changed, so that now the genus and species names are more accurate. Some examples of this are the Bacterium aerogenes, which is now Aerobacter aerogenes, the Bacterium violaceum, which is now Chromobacterium violaceum, and the Bacterium amylovorum, which is now Erwinia amylovora.
