If its a girly 12 year old then lip glosses, gift cards for stores like target or justice. If you have a kind of tom boyish well not tom boyish but the video game type you could get a giftcard for GameStop. A really good game for that age is called harvest moon all versions are great.

FOR THE GIRLY GIRL:
purses, aeropostale or pink clothing, ugg boots, makeup

FOR THE TOM BOY:
How about something that will be fun but also feminine? The tom boy will appreciate the fact that you realize she is a girl! i suggest a skateboard with cute designs on it, maybe pink Snowboarding gear, or, if this tom boy doesn't like sports, pink heels, or even a new laptop or i pod.

FOR THE SCIENCE GEEK:
Pleo is an amazing baby dino.
