If you want to make your network faster, pls use Switches in place of hubs, this is because Hubs are Dummie - it will search the whole 24 ports before sending the request to the right machine, but switches are autosensing device that send the request to the right machine at the right time.

If you have XP Pro:

- click start > run

- enter "gpedit.msc" and hit ok

- go to computer configuration > administrative templates > network

- click the folder "QoS Packet Scheduler"

- right-click "Reservable Bandwidth", select properties

- Change it from "Not Configured" to "Enabled" and set your bandwidth limit to "0"

- Select OK

- Go to "My Network Places", then "View Network Connections"

- Right-click your internet connection you want this to work for and select Properties.

- Make sure "QoS packet Scheduler" is checked off.

- Close everything and restart your computer.

Now you have 20% more of your available bandwidth to use.

The question cannot be answered as asked, as there are a huge number of different places in a computer system where bandwidth of a communications stream can be important. A short list of places that bandwidth is a factor:

  • Network Interface
  • Primary I/O (Input/Output) bus for Expansion Cards
  • Secondary I/O buses for integrated peripheral controllers
  • Integrated peripheral controllers to devices attached to that controller
  • I/O bus to main bus controller
  • internal I/O bus on certain expansion cards (e.g. graphics cards)
  • CPU to on-die caches
  • CPU to off-die caches
  • CPU package to main memory ("front-side" bus)
  • CPU package to bus controller ("back-side" bus)
  • main memory to bus controller

Please re-ask the question being more specific as to either the problem being experienced, or as to which area of bandwidth you are concerned with
