I'm guessing this Cadillac does not have the optional fuel injection (it has a carburetor) since I don't know the VIN. If it has fuel injection, generic troubleshooting is difficult. Things to check: 1. Fuel filter - OK or replaced. 2. --NEGATIVE-- battery cable. The positive cable goes to the starter, but some of these had the negative cable going to the chassis vs. the engine block. This can cause a LOT of strange problems with the electrical system. My 68 Fleetwood Limo would sometimes try to crank and sometimes not. It was this cable at the chassis that was loose. 3. Is the automatic choke (almost) closing on the carburetor for starting? If it is full open, it will flood the engine on attempting to start. 4. WITH ENGINE IGNITION SWITCHED OFF!!! If you look in the throat of the carburetor. Can you see a tiny stream of gas stream in when you press on the accelerator? If not, then there is no fuel in the system or a blockage of the fuel (accelerator pump, stopped up jet, blocked fuel filter -see #1 above-. 5. Check that all vacuum lines going to/from the carburetor are connected. They can make it tough to start if disconnected. 6. Good luck. This is about all I can say without more information.
Your alternator is not keeping the battery charged.
Yes, the alternator provides electrical energy to keep the battery charged. If the alternator isn't functioning, the battery will discharge and there will be insufficient electrical energy to operate the ignition and other electrical components. Understand that a battery is only an electrical STORAGE device. Electrical energy is produced by the alternator. The function of the battery is to provide electrical energy for NEXT time you want to start the engine. Once the engine is started, the alternator must take care of all electrical requirements of the vehicle as well as for providing enough additional electrical energy to replace electrical energy to the battery that was last used when the engine was started.
The alternator is run by a belt connected to the engine. When the engine is running the alternator is turning. The alternator is what produces the electrical current that charges the battery & powers everything electrical while the engine is running. the battery is mainly to start the engine.
could be the alternator going bad or battery.
The main cause of battery drains is a bad electrical system. The electrical system is normally powered by the alternator and once the alternator goes bad the battery has a hard time holding a charge,
The alternator is part of the electrical system. It is what charges the battery and keeps it charged.
have an alternator, battery, and electrical check to find out what the problem is. battery may not be taking a charge, or the alternator is not putting out enough voltage.
The alternator might not be charging the battery

no your alternator and your cars battery is
-- Answer -- The battery in a car runs ALL the electrical systems in that car. The alternator only charges the battery. If you run a car without the battery in place you will ruin the alternator. Phil
