The door sensor is an integral part of the door latch mechanism. The sensor cannot be replaced independent of the latch. A sensor appears on each of the four doors, as well as the tailgate. In my 2002 2.3L Ranger, I had the same problem with the overhead light staying on too. Take the door panel off the drivers side door. (3 screws- one in bottom of hand hold, one in lower rear corner, and one (torx type) under the plastic cover on the window crank. Lift the plastic panel and remove. Pull back the plastic cover from the door and blow compressed air and or WD-40 on the electrical connection and latch at the rear of the door. Locate by following the wire to the latch. That very well may solve the problem. I solved the same problem simply by soaking everything within reach of the little red tube on my can of WD40, through the openings under the doorhandle.point the spray towards and around the locking mechanism, and keep the moving parts moving as you spray.maybe you'll be lucky.

Just going by the question...I would say that the latch has gotten in "the closed door position". Be sure that the door is unlocked. With your finger lift out on the latch on the end of the door and use the door handle to "open" the door latch.
