Hurricane Freda struck Vancouver Island in 1962. It wasn't truly a hurricane (not rotating with an eye) but it carried hurricane force winds and did a tremendous amount of damage down the west coast of North America. It's track went up the island from Victoria. Freda was the remnant of a typhoon, added onto another severe weather event. You can do an internet search for Hurricane Freda, or Typhoon Freda and come up with a lot of info. Americans tend to call it the Columbus Day Storm. Lots of information can be found at: www.islandnet.com/~see/weather/almanac/arc2007/alm07oct.htm
