Having problems starting 1986 Chevy El Camino when you turn the key it doesn't want to engage the starter if you play with the shifting lever it will eventually start How can this be fixed?

That appears to be the neutral safety lockout switch. You may be able to adjust the switch to make it work, or you may need to replace the switch.
