The skeletal system is extremely important. It is what supports a person's body weight and keeps them from collapsing under themselves. If a person's BMI (Body Mass Index) is neither underweight or overweight the person typically has no need for concern. This may not be the case for aging members of society as bones slowly start to lose density as we age. Of course, previous injuries can have chronic effects on the skeletal system and can cause nerves to inflame and flare up.

The major concern for the skeletal system is for obese and nutrition deficient people.

  • An obese person is constantly putting extra strain on their skeletal system which can cause damage in the form of stress fractures like shin splints for example. Not to mention the added weight and pressure on the joints which can cause stiffness and chronic pain. An obese person is typically a rather inactive person as well so the skeletal system can go extended periods of time without use which can lower bone density.
  • A nutrition deficient person is someone who lacks the proper amount of vitamins, minerals, and/or caloric intake to be able to sustain a healthy body weight. This means the body is not getting enough nutrients to sustain any kind of bone density as well which can result in fractures or even clean breaks. A person should never deprive themselves of the vitamins and minerals that the body needs. If someone is on a diet be sure to eat nutrient dense foods like fruits an vegetables that are also low on calories.
  • Remember that high amounts of protein intake has a depleting effect on the body's calcium. Athletes who take protein supplements should also make sure they are getting adequate calcium to compensate. A lack of vitamin D can also have a depleting effect on the body's calcium. The typical person can get plenty of vitamin D just through exposure to the Sun for 15 - 45 minutes throughout the day depending on pigment coloration. Darker pigmented people need longer exposure.
