The hottest region in Europe is located in south western Spain and the southern inland parts of Portugal. This occurs from late July through to mid-August when there's an incursion of dust moving in from North Africa.

During such times it is quite common for the daytime maximum temperature to rise a little above 40°C (104°F) for at least 3-4 days.
