Best Answer

ECU or Engine Control Unit on cars controls the engine on computer controlled cars. It uses a closed-loop control that monitors outputs of a system to control the inputs to a system, managing the emissions and fuel economy of the engine. It also gathers data from the various sensors ranging from coolant temperature to O2 volume in your exhaust (which explains the number of codes which vary from one car model to the other). From the data gathered, it performs somewhat an analysis to determine what is wrong with your car.

If car works why wouldn't a car computer i.e ECU work?

A car and a car's computer that is stated as ECU, their functioning are not inter-relative. Actually, it is just a pre-programmed control given to the car for some specific functions. Some examples are:- Power steering, Power brake, Electronic Fuel Injection Control, etc. So, the non-functioning of the ECU depends only upon the ECU itself. The problems may be:- 1. Whether the ECU's circuit-board is alright or not. 2. Whether it is getting the required input from the car or not. 3. Whether it is doing the processes it is programmed to do or not. 4. Whether it is giving the required output to the car or not.

Can you start a car with the ecu removed?

No.

Car you drive a car with the ecu removed?

No. ECU generally stands for Engine Control Unit, i.e. the brain or nerve centre for engine. Without it - no go. With that said, not all cars have an ECU. An older car with a carburetor, old-fashioned distributor and all that will run quite happily entirely without anything even remotely similar to an ECU. A Diesel car may not have an ECU etc etc.
