Henry VIII split from the Catholic church controlled by the Pope in Rome to start the Church of England with himself as it's head. This was part of aprotestantmovement sweeping Europe at the time, but Henry did not want to identify his church with otherProtestantchurches, forming whatamountedto a variation of Catholic teachings but separate from the power structure under the Pope.

Henry'ssuccessorsdealtwiththedivisionthis created in England by moving back and forth between aProtestantchurch and theCatholicchurch (of his daughters who each ruled for a time Mary sided with the Catholic church as did her Mother andElizabethlater sided with the Church of England). In part because of this back and forth and the punishment of following the wrong teachings undersuccessiverulers over several decades society in England has had to deal with the conflict between the two groups mostnotablyin NorthernIreland, controlled by England. Today the Church of England is the state church of England but of course many English follow otherbeliefsincluding the Catholic church. BeforeHenrythere was basically only one Christian church.
