The spanish sold them to Demark; and the united states declared war and invaded the islands (Puerto Rico, virgin islands) shortly after. The Philippines, Guam, Palau, and Taiwan were part of a peace treaty settlement with Spain in the Spanish-American war. We later sold Taiwan to Japan and gave Palau independence.
