An alpha particle can be written as ¸He«+ (Sorry, but it will not print properly on this answer page. The notation should be a superscript 4 over a subscript 2, followed by He, and then a superscript 2 over a subscript 2, followed by a superscript + sign).

The symbol of an alpha particle is 24He2+

The first 2 is the atomic number, the number of protons. The 4 is the Atomic Mass number, the number of protons and neutrons. (It should be written directly over the 2, but that is not possible with the limited graphics we have with WikiAnswers.)The He is the symbol for Helium, because an alpha particle is a helium nucleus. The second 2 and its plus sign indicates the ionic charge is +2, meaning there are no electrons, and that the atom's charge comes from the two protons alone.

What is Alpha radiation stopped by?

Alpha particles are the strongest of the three known types of radiation (alpha, beta, & gamma). Although the strongest, the alpha particles are the least penetrating. They do not tend to penetrate any substance.A well-known example is your skin. Alpha particles do not penetrate your skin barrier. However, alpha particles energy is high and is a cause of skin cancer and genetic mutations.
