they are usually numbered by tubes in the motor such as if a Toyota has 4 cylinders they will be tubed in the motor

the cylinders are numbered starting with one from the back left of the motor so the back three cylinders are numbered 1-3-5 and the front three are numbered 2-4-6
Bank 2 is the even numbered cylinders. Cylinder 1 is closest to serpentine belt and all cylinders on that side of engine are odd numbers. Bank 2 is all the even numbered cylinders and the O2 sensor is screwed into exhaust pipe somewhere between the even numbered cylinders and the cat converter.
The cylinders are numbered from left to right.
GM numbers cylinders sequentially from the front. Note that on all V motors (not inline), this means that oddly numbered cylinders are on one side and evenly numbered cylinders are on the other. One side IS a bit further forward than the other. Look closely.
