In the US, in my opinion, horribly. Ex-cons are not allowed to vote for a period of 10 years and their criminal record is a matter of public record forever, unless an expungement is allowed. Many places of employment will not hire an ex-con so the recidivism rate is very high for these individuals. They are continually punished for their crimes, even after having served their time.
