While search engines and subject directories both help to find information on the internet, they have several differences. Subject directories are hand picked by people and allow you to browse by category. Search engines allow access to billions of websites and use algorithms to rank the websites according to how relevant they are to your search. Quality of websites is not evaluated by search engines.
Typically the difference between a subject directory and a search engine is the way in which the information about a website is gathered. In the case of a directory, generally websites are submitted to directories for inclusion. In the case of a search engine, these use computer programs known as "bots" or "Spiders" which "crawl" the internet from link to link gathering information on the pages that they visit (known as "indexing"). Thus to get a site indexed by a search engine, one of the best strategies is to place links back to your site from other sites - in this way the search engine will find it. In the case of directories, you will need to visit the directory or use an automated submission tool and send information about your site to the directory.
