How are the commands in Photoshop similar to the commands in GIMP?
They mostly do the same things-
but in Photoshop many actions can be done in a separate layer ...
the end results may be the same, but in Photoshop you can go back and change things to a deeper level than you can in GIMP.

On a photo-editing software. You can use Photoshop, Corel Painter, Gimp, Photfiltre, Photoscape. But the best two are Photoshop and Corel Painter. However you have to pay for those, if your not willing you can use Gimp, Photofiltre, and Photoscape which are free. Gimp is the best among the free one. I personally have Photoshop and Gimp. Probably, but not certainly, Photoshop. On the other hand, the Gimp is free, and is better at certain kinds of tasks. If you're trying to get a job as a graphic designer, then Photoshop, because it's an industry standard. If you're just doing it as a hobby, you might want to see if GIMP is "good enough" for you... chances are that it is.
GIMP doesn't have many problems. If the file you are editing is too big, GIMP can be a bit slow, and it takes some practice to figure out how to use some of its more advanced functions. Otherwise, it is very similar to Photoshop and is easy to use (unless you want advanced stuff, that takes time.)
