Generally, you will need a hardware converter to run a video signal into a VGA input.

VGA uses separate signals for Red, Green and Blue signals with two more for horizontal and vertical synchronization pulses.

Video uses various signal formats. The common types are:

Composite - a single signal that contains all picture information, vertical and horizontal sync.

S-video - Two signals with one carrying brightness information and sync pulses and the other carrying color information

Component - Three signals of which one carries brightness information and sync pulses with the other two carrying color information.

The best quality can be achieved with the component signal and a relatively simple converter can be used to convert the image signals to RGB and separate the syncs to the required H and V. Other converters can be purchased to decode the color information from composite and S-video signals into RGB.

Note that broadcast signals run at 50 (in Europe) or 60Hz (in North America). The lowest frequency officially supported for VGA signals is 60Hz so there is a possibility that European signals may not operate on a standard VGA monitor. Experience of this shows that the majority will handle 50Hz but around 1 in 5 or 6 will display a 50Hz signal poorly or not at all.

Additionally, SD broadcast signals have a resolution of 640 x 480 (US) or 720 X 576 (Europe). The resolution will not increase when the signal is converted to a VGA format. There are some converters that offer up-conversion to a higher resolution. Apart from the additional cost, they will NOT deliver any more detail in the image so are normally not worth considering.

To find a converter, you will need to look for specialist AV dealers rather than a large electrical retailer. Take a look on line or use local directories to track one down.

Not sure if they do anything. VGA is a video output on computer not audio, so will convert to the Yellow composite or S/Video cable.
