How can a teenager create a flier to advertise themselves in the neighborhood as being available for odd jobs?

I'm not sure what you mean by "how." If you have access to a photocopier and a computer, just sit down one day with PowerPoint (or even Paint) and create some nice images of the kind of jobs you can perform. As far as the message you should use, first, be realistic! Don't go advertising yourself for things you can't possibly do. People will see it and scratch you off their memory. Second, don't limit yourself! Depending how old you are, some people will feel more or less comfortable hiring you. Think outside the box. Think what your parents usually have you do (that doesn't include dishes or cleaning your room), but maybe organizing the garage/attic/basement. Bathing the pets, trimming bushes, keeping a garden, walking their dogs or maybe even offer yourself as a mentor to their youngsters! Kind of a big brother/sister complexion. Some parents are so busy now-days they wouldn't mind someone to come after school to help their younger ones. Maybe something like "Tired of mowing the lawn in the hot sun (or shoveling the snow in this weather)? Call Jimmy at 555-1000 and help him get his iPod!" The iPod part is to show the people that see your ad that you will use the money for something constructive. Be creative again! Gatherings will be important, because that's how you get to be known. If you advertise "Jimmy, looking for odd jobs" and they have no clue, they are very less likely to actually give any serious thought. However, if you go to school activities, churches, community gatherings and offer your help with like, food drives, managing tickets, keeping things in place, you will be building up a lot of good references.
