It is a over head valve engine with a timing chain.
The timing chain is located under the valve cover on the passenger side of the motor.
This is the most pain in the wallet job. You moust remove your valve cover, distributer, front valve cover, and other numerous things. If you got the time you might want to do it, but remember, you will need to do alot of adjusting afterwards. A shop told me that I might as well get a new engine when the timing chain needs to be replaced.

how to set the valve timming on a nissan 1400
variable valve timing is where the engine changes valve timing based on the driving situation much like ignition timing is changed to meet the needs of the engine in specific situations. in most cars valve timing is static and determined by the timing gear on the camshaft
Valve lifter could be sticking. Take the valve cover off and start the engine. You can narrow down which one it is. Might Not be sticking and just need adjusting.
