When you conserve energy, you're not using as much of the fuels that harm the atmosphere as you normally would. How much would depend on how many people are conserving. One person conserving will not have as much of an impact as a million people conserving.

Most of our electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). These contain carbon that was laid away under the earth millions of years ago. When we started digging it up and burning it at the beginning of the Industrial Age (about the 1750s) we released all this hidden carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere where it joined the greenhouse gases.

Greenhouse gases capture heat and prevent it escaping into space. The natural greenhouse effect is what keeps the planet comfortably warm.

This extra CO2 is too much for the natural greenhouse effect to cope with and so the accelerated, or enhanced greenhouse effect comes about. This is what is causing global warming.

So if we save energy, that is, cut down on our use of oil in transport and our use of electricity, then we can help stop the most severe results of global warming.

Global warming is increasing because of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Most electricity is produced round the world by burning fossil fuels, especially coal. This burning releases a lot of carbon dioxide that has been locked away for millions of years. Now it adds to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to increase global warming.

So cutting down our electricity use cuts greenhouse gases and slows global warming.

Most electricity comes from burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) which adds carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere. This is the basic cause of our present climate change. If we conserve energy we put less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and climate change is a little less likely to happen.
