National identity is a concept that can both unity and divide people. It unites people by giving them a feeling of national pride. It divides people because it can give people a feeling that their nation is superior to others.

Nationalism is considered a unifying force when it is used to unite a group of diverse people for a common goal such as expelling a foreign ruler. Nationalism can also be considered a divisive force when for example, an empire is full of a diverse group of people and each group wants autonomy. Each nationality would seperate and fight for its independence.

Nationalism came from people realizing that they had unique customs and traditions. Each of the various European ethnic groups began to articulate what their cultural views were, how they defined themselves, and their historical narratives.

Nationalism played a vital role in uniting the nation-states of Germany and Italy which had previously resisted attempts at unification even though the peoples of various small principalities shared linguistic and cultural traits. Conversely, nationalism played a strong part in ripping up large multi-ethnic empires like Austria-Hungary, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire, with the latter being beset by Greek, Bulgarian, and Serbian independence movements that actually achieved success.

How did nationalism affect Germany and Austria differently?

In general, you could say that German nationalism tended to bring the country together, and the nationalism in Austria-Hungary tended to pull them apart. There was a much greater land area, much greater religious and cultural diversity, and a much greater overlap in people identifying with other countries and language differences in Austria-Hungary. Nationalism of course continued. After the dissolution Austrian Catholics were bonded together by religion, and although many of them were German, they didn't want to join with the protestants. German nationalism in Nazi Germany continued, and may have been a unifying experience for some, but at the expense of the ostracism and dehumanization of others.

Fate was both their meeting, which brought them together, and who their families were, which tore them apart. There isn't a really complex answer for this one.
