Maybe you could bring it up casually.....if he is around 14 try getting one of his friends to ask him if its weird for a girlfriend to get a boy something.
If hes like around 17 or 20 try saying that you dont want it to be awkward and just ask him if you should get him something.
If your older then just fix him something for dinner.
