You should have never bought a car without receiving the title. But, you did so go to your local DMV and explain this and request a duplicate title. That is all you can do.
LOOKING FOR TITLE OWNER NAME
YOU CANT THEY DESTROYED MOST RECORDS, BEST YOU CAN DO IS FIND A COLLECTORS GUN SITE AND FIND THE YEAR OF MANUFACTUE.
Depending on what state you live in....you must file the paperwork with the issuing authority. Here in Pa the DCNR will check to see if there ever was a title holder then send notice that you are attempting to title it and investigate as to why the title was never transferred. If the original title owner does not reply, a new title in your name will be issued. But again, each state may be different
You need to hire a professional. A professional title examiner can perform a title examination to find the owner of the property. If the property is listed as "owner unknown" in the tax assessor's records the research may be costly.

If you can't find the previous owner to execute a corrective and confirmatory deed then you must bring a Quiet Title action in a court of equity and obtain a judgment. Only a court order can clear the title. You should check to see if you paid for a certification of title or an owner's title insurance policy when you purchased the property. If you paid for professional representation at the time of your purchase perhaps they are responsible for clearing the title. Title coverage that insures over the defect is not a cure. It's a band-aid.
