If you 'want out' of the contract - you will have to pay an 'exit fee' equivalent to the unused months of the contract. Say you're paying 20.00 a month, and you're in month 5 when the phone was stolen. You would have to pay the remaining 18 months (360.00) to get out of the contract.
The reason for this is - you're effectively getting a free phone with your contract - the phone company paid a manufacturer for the handset - and they recover that cost from the customer during their initial contract period.
If the phone was reported lost or stolen, it cannot be activated again. Sprint/Nextel has it listed and the serial number has been flagged and it will not allow that phone to be activated.
Nope - once a phone's been blocked via the IMEI number - it's permanently useless !
Not if the loss or theft was reported to Sprint. Cellular carriers, including Sprint, maintain a list of the serial numbers of devices that have been activated on their systems. (Actually, they have the serial-number ranges of all the devices made for operation on their systems.) All cellular activations, whether at a company store, a kiosk, a reseller, online, or over the phone, are processed through the carrier's computer-based activation system, which has access to all these serial numbers. The carriers will not activate service for one person on a device that belongs to another. There is little point in attempting to activate a lost or stolen phone, since second-hand phones are inexpensive. Most customers on contract plans get a new device every two years or so, so there are millions of unused phones out there to be had. And for signing up on a new 2-year contract, the carrier will give you a phone for "free." ("Free" meaning in exchange for your agreement to pay a set monthly plan cost for 2 years or pay a substantial penalty for an early termination.)
Most phone companies will charge you if you want to unlock your phone before your contract with them runs out. It has been part of the contract

Sprint can transfer your mobile phone number from one Sprint phone to another Sprint phone in most cases. First decide which method you want to use for contacting Sprint:- Dial *2 from your mobile phone, or call9042353345from any phone.- Go to any Sprint store.- Go to any Radio Shack store. You will need to provide your mobile phone number and identify yourself with your name and PIN, a previously-chosen secret number of 6 digits or more. (Passwords used to be 4 digits and were generally the last-4 digits of the customer's Social Security Number, but Sprint just recently moved to a more-secure identity check. They may still help you, though, if y this number on the inside back of the phone, under the battery.Sprint or Radio Shack will now have to program your phone or talk you through the programming. This takes just a couple minutes. Keep your old phone turned off while you do this.Your new phone might start working with your new number immediately, but Sprint says they may need up to 4 hours. Transferring any stored voicemail messages could take longer. There should be no charge for this change, or contract extension, or extension of eligibility for credit toward a new phone. Discuss these points with Customer Service to be certain there is no misunderstanding. To transfer your "address book" (phone directory, all the numbers stored on your phone) and other information, you can either manually recover the information from your old phone (even after the number is transferred), or you can take both phones to a Sprint store where, in most cases, their equipment can transfer your information. There may be a small charge. There are a few cases where the number cannot be transferred:- The "new" phone is already active on Sprint on someone else's account.- The phone has been reported to Sprint as lost or stolen.- The last account the phone was registered to has a past-due balance.- The phone is too old to support the current Sprint network.- The phone is not GPS-enabled and so cannot report its location when making a 911 call.
When you sign up for your first Sprint contract, it will probably just be two years long. You can use a Sprint coupon to get a better deal at this time, saving you a lot of money. Many people forget, however, that this does not have to be the end of the savings. Every two years, you will need to sign a new contract. It is a good idea to find a new Sprint coupon each time. You can continuously get savings on the services that you need even if you have been with the company for a number of years.
