It depends on what your son's attitude is like. If he is a motivated student, then a tutor would be a good idea. Encourage him to stay after school or go in before school to talk to teachers if there is a subject he doesn't understand. Also, there are really great podcasts on iTunes-U that are free and help with most any subject.
If your son is not motivated, it's more difficult, but start with trying to get him motivated without making him feel too stressed. Don't take away sports or social life, though, but do make sure he finishes his homework.
