If your computer is running very slow, there can be a few different things wrong with it. The first thing to do is to delete your temporary internet files. Next is to run a disk cleanup. After that, a malware detection program should be run to detect any malware or spyware. After that, download any operating system updates. If the computer is still running slow, try to pinpoint a specific program which may be causing the computer to run slow and disable it from startup or remove it completely. The computer should then be defragmented to optimize the file allocation table. Random access memory can be upgraded to enable programs to run a bit faster. If none of this works, the final fix is to re-install the operating system. See the link below for a detailed description of how to optimize your PC.
Computers tend to slow down as you use them constantly, this is because of all the junk files that accumlate. It also disorganizes your harddrive and your registry(system configurations), making it harder for your computer to find what it needs, when it needs it. This causes your computer to slow down and lag. This is NOT a problem with your computer so don't waste money on expensive computer repair tools. This senario can be compared to cars, the more you use them, the more they break down. and every now and then they need maintanance. I will show you how to work this out.
The easiest way is to use a 3rd party program to help you. I recommend IObit's advanced system care. It has a free version that i've been using for almost 2 years now with no problems. You can upgrade to the pro version if you like it. The reason i recommend this is because it can make your life easy by doing all the maintanance for you with a single click. This program can be downloaded at iobit.com. They have some other pretty cool software too for free, so check them out as well.
If you don't want to download any software, you can do most of the maintanace (not all of it) manually with window's built in tools. Look for windows defragmentation tool in your computer and run that. It will re-organize your harddrive. It should be on "automatic defrag" which makes it run automatically every month or so.
You can also turn off your settings. If you are anything above a Windows XP i recommend you turn off "Windows Areo" and "peek" to save performance drain. To do this you can go to the
control panel-> advanced system settings-> advanced tab --> Performance settings and select the bullet for "adjust for best performance" and hit apply.
Now, it's recommended that you also run a registry defragmentation. This will optimize your registry files. It can't be done with windows default tools. You have to download a 3rd party tool. PLEASE BE CAREFUL: There are a lot of registry fixer tool out there for free that are fake and contain viruses. They totally mess up your computer so only download tools from trusted companies. IObit, as i recommended, is something i trust. But there are many others. Do your research, read reviews from several websites, and be careful before downloading and installing stuff.
That's all i have for you for now. Besides this, you can consider upgrading your hardware such as RAM, Graphics Card, etc. Hope this helped and good luck :)
Dump any unused files that have been sitting on your computer for several months. Dump programs which you no longer use. Clean out your history and cache files that you no longer need. Run you anti virus program to ensure that you have no viruses on your system. Run your defrag program to consolidate your program files on your hard drive. Consider adding more RAM to your system. Also consider dumping any big suites like Microsoft Office. They take up space and slow your machine down. Download Open Office. It's free and takes up much less space.
We can maximize the performance of our computer through proper mainting it and matching the processer, Ram etc. And the most important is intall good antivirus to save from viruses.
Use Disk Cleanup.

what factors influence a computers performance
well, you can keep the amount of data on it to a minimum, which would make it faster
The use of magnetic tape improved the performance of computers by giving them the ability to read and write data quickly and reliably.
