First do tons of research and find a good dog. If you do not, you may end up getting a dog that you can't handle and have to call a dog whisperer. Look on the internet or news paper to find a breeder who is selling that breed. If the breeder acts strange, such as not letting you see the mother or father, or not letting you see the room with the puppy at all. It is probably a puppy mill. This is illegal in most places. The pups that come from there usually have many defects and problems throughout their life. Please be cautious about these places.

It depends on what you are looking for, for puppies if there is a certain color you're partial to then look at the puppy's ear since that is close to the color its adult coat will be.

There is also puppy testing if you are interested but the results aren't always accurate.

As well you should look at the medical history of the dogs parents, and if it is an older dog you can compare it's measurements to what an average Golden should be.
