Many LED bulbs use 12 volts, so are very simple to power from a cars 12 volt system.
LED Bulbs can be used as direct replacements for many of the standard bulbs on most cars, with the exception of the headlights. LED bulbs are currently not bright enough for direct headlight replacement.
Additional LED lighting can also be added to any element of the cars power system easily, by adding an LED module in line. As LED bulbs have low power drain, they generally do not cause issues with overloading the wiring loom.
Consideration would have to be made as to how the lights are controlled, so instead of being wired directly to the battery, they are often wired to either activate with the accessories (such as the radio), with the internal lights or with the sidelights/headlights.

A word of caution, testing an alternator that way can cause damage to the alternator. The alternator needs power to make power unlike the old generators from the past.
