If it's the same 3.0L engine they put in the 2001 Montero Sport, the alternator is (looking from the front of the engine into the bay) located on the left side of the motor, toward the radiator, down low. It's straight below the power steering pump. There should be a belt that runs from the crankshaft to the alternator. Good luck... I'm on my third in 3 months.

This problem can occur if you've recently replaced your battery or the battery was disconnected for a while, the vehicle's computer must do what is referred to as "Relearn". Basically, restart the engine, let it run for a few minutes and try to put it in gear, either in neutral or drive. You may have to try a couple of times. Rev the engine a few times until it stays on. This has worked for me on two occasions after replacing my batteries. Do not go out in traffic until you are certain that it has relearned, otherwise it will continue to stall. The advice came from a good service tech where I purchased the Montero.
