It doesn't help to put all your past work experience in your resume if it's not related to the job you're applying for. For example, if you're applying for a job as a lab technician, you don't have to put your work experience as a store cashier in your resume. First, do your homework: find out something about the company to which you are applying. What is it known for? Who are its major executives? If it's a national chain, who are the local managers? Has it been in the news recently? These are all facts you can use to demonstrate your interest in the company; a generic cover letter where you seem to know nothing about what the company does, or who works there, isn't going to attract anyone's attention. Your mission in sending a cover letter is to show the people doing the hiring that you really want to work there, and you believe you have the right qualifications. In other words, your cover letter is how you introduce yourself to the person (or persons) doing the hiring; therefore, you should also explain why you want the job, and why you feel you have something to offer.

That's where getting information about the company can be helpful in what you write. For example, "I was excited to read in the Boston Globe yesterday that [name of company] is expanding its online presence. I am a skilled and experienced computer programmer, and I believe I could help you to have a more effective website." When you apply, you should tailor your resumé the way you tailor your cover letter. Stress the skills and experience the job posting is asking for. Demonstrate that you have the kinds of abilities that the company needs. I have several different resumés, depending on which skills or which qualifications the prospective employer seems to want. Your goal is to show that what you have to offer is a good fit with what is needed. A personable cover letter and a resumé that is able to show your skill-set (as well as your work history, education, references, etc) can help you to get an interview. Oh, and one other thing-- make sure there are no spelling or punctuation errors in what you send out. Your letter and resumé represent YOU, so make sure you provide something that looks professional!
