I asume you are asking because your car is over heating. there are a couple of ways to check a suspect head gasket, first you can have a pressure test, this involves pressurising the cooling system for about 1/2 an hour watching for coolant leaks and noting any pressure drop. If no leaks are found and the pressure drops , It's more than likely that coolant is seeping into the bores indicating a head gasket leak. Second test involves using reaction fluid the fluid is poured into a tool which is inserted into the coolant filler neck the engine is started and them the tool is squeezed to draw a sample of air from the cooling system If the fluid changes colour it is showing combustion gasses are present in the cooling system that indicates the head gasket has failed I hope this post was of use to you Best wishes
has the car been overheated?
If it is leaking from a bad head gasket, it is because of a bad head gasket. If it is leaking from a bad intake manifold gasket, it is because of a bad intake manifold gasket.
A pressure test on the cylinders will tell if you have a bad head gasket. If you hear a whistle sound near the intake gasket, spray WD-40 (or any type of petroleum spray) on the area and if there is a leak the engine rpms (or engine sound) should change.
The white smoke out of the exhaust will indicate a head or a head gasket issue. the only way to tell is to pull the head and inspect for signs of a bad gasket and have the head cleaned and checked for cracks or warping.
if it is coolant and not condensation. I would say you have a blown head gasket. the coolant will smell sweet. but if it is a bad head gasket it will run hot also.
It could be a bad head gasket or a leaking oil cooler. Doing a compression check should tell if it is a bad head gasket.
A head gasket is only one of the many gaskets in the engine. Each has a separate function and failure by any one gasket will result in different type of leakage. A head gasket failure is perhaps the most disruptive.
Yes , engine coolant can get in an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket , a warped or cracked cylinder head , a bad intake manifold gasket etc. ( P.S. I'm not a mechanic / technician )
replace it
Check for water in your oil, if so, this is a sign of bad head gasket. White smoke from the exhaust and loss of coolant with no apparent leak are all signs of a blown head gasket. You can also remove the thermostat (it is much cheaper to replace and easier to troubleshoot as well). If the temperature of the vehicle lowers, your thermostat was the problem.
a cylinder head gasket is called in French "un joint de culasse"
A bad head gasket or a cracked head will do that.
